Veliko Tarnovo

Veliko Tarnovo is a district city in northern Bulgaria. The city is situated along Yantra River. Veliko Tarnovo is one of the oldest cities in the country, as there is evidence of archaeological excavations.
The most significant monument in Veliko Turnovo is the medieval fortress Tsarevets, located on the eponymous peak, surrounded on three sides by Yantra River. Excavations show that Tsarevets, though surrounded by a wall, was not a closed fortress and an authentic medieval town in the centre of which stood a palace, Saint Petka Church, many residential and commercial buildings, water reservoirs and towers. The highest part of Tsarevets was a patriarch residence and was very close to patriarchal church of "Vaznesenie Hristovo". Tsarevets holds "Sound and Light" show which recreates the Bulgarian history through audio and light.
By Tsarevets, there is another old hill - Trapezitsa. The archaeological excavations on the hill continue today. Veliko Tarnovo is famous for many Orthodox churches. One of the most emblematic medieval churches is Saint Forty Martyrs. In the church were buried Bulgarian kings Kaloyan and Ivan Asen II, and many other members of royal families and the Bulgarian aristocracy.

In its vicinity, there are some of the most famous Bulgarian monasteries - Patriarch, Transfiguration, Arbanashki, Plakovski, Kapinovski and others.
Only 6 km away from Veliko Tarnovo lies the architectural reserve Arbanassi. The old village has preserved magnificent architectural monuments of the Bulgarian Revival, old churches and picturesque yards, buried in flowers and greenery.
